🐍 What Does “Doyo no Ushi no Hi” Mean?
「土用の丑の日」ってどういう意味？
The phrase “Doyo no Ushi no Hi” literally means “the Ox Day of Doyo”.
「土用の丑の日」という言葉は、文字通り「土用の期間の丑の日」という意味だよ。
Doyo refers to the period of about 18 days before each seasonal change (based on the traditional Chinese calendar).
「土用」は、季節の変わり目の約18日間（旧暦に基づく期間）を指しているんだよ。
Ushi no Hi means “the day of the ox,” which comes from the Chinese zodiac system where each day has an animal sign.
「丑の日」は「干支（えと）」に基づいたもので、12種類の動物で日を表すうちのひとつ「丑（うし）」にあたる日ということ。

Summer in Japan can be extremely hot and humid.
日本の夏はとても暑くて湿気が多い。
In the Edo period (1603–1868), people believed that eating nutritious food would help them survive the summer heat.
江戸時代、人々は「栄養のあるものを食べれば夏バテを防げる」と信じていたんだよ。
Eel, which is rich in protein and vitamins, was seen as the perfect food to boost energy.
タンパク質やビタミンが豊富なウナギは、まさに夏を乗り切るためのスタミナ食だったということ。
There’s also a wordplay: in Japanese, foods that start with “u” (like unagi) were believed to be good for you on the day of the ox (ushi).
「“う”で始まる食べ物（うなぎ、うどん、梅干しなど）が“うし（丑）”の日に良い」と言われた語呂合わせもあります。
